For example, "How Does an Eraser Work?" doesn't just explain how erasers work — did you know they usually contain vegetable oil? — but also reveals how people removed pencil marks before Englishman Edward Naime invented the eraser in 1770. (They used rolled-up pieces of bread.)

Math and science dominate, and students are the primary audience, but Khan is adding additional topics and welcomes adult learners. New for April

We've had quite a lot of new stuff in recently, for boys, girls, toddlers, older kids and even adults. Below are some of the highlights. Our family's personal favourites are the Sunprint kit, the Stegosaurus wood kit (great value) and Yikers.

Winner of a Mensa (the high IQ society) Select award, this is one of our current favourite games and comes complete with its own sound effects. Play it head to head, in teams or solo; great for travel; for children and adults or for the family; the mat can be adjusted to cater for different skill levels.
The idea is simple - you place special magnets on triangular pieces of mouse-pad-like material, trying to stay out of the magnetic field of the other magnets. The object is to get rid of all of your magnets first, but beware! If you cause magnets to stick together, or if you push any off the edge, you have to pick those up. The noise the magnets make when they click together adds to the fun!

NanoBlocks (from $14.95)

Lego's coolest older brother just got better.

New in to Australia are an Elephant, a new electric guitar, and a pair of Clown Fish. We've also got new in a keyboard and rabbit along with the old favourites such as the Koala, the Meercats, Giant Panda, Space Station, Eiffel Tower and Easter Island.

For those of you that don't know, Nanoblocks are tiny construction blocks from Japan. Because they are so small, they allow a much greater level of detail than you can get with Lego. They come in various levels of difficulty but even the hardest can be done in under an hour. They are a great gift for kids from about 9/10 up and adults.

Over in Japan, as well as buying sets, you can buy generic nanoblock pieces and design your own creations. That is exactly what Christopher Tan has done and you can check his Blog here:

Top Trumps Dinosaurs ($12.95)

Full of beautiful, realistic and dramatic illustrations, Gigatosaurus, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus and Triceratops all feature. If you don't know your Archaeopteryx from your Euoplocephalus you need this Top Trumps pack now! Great for trips.

These were all the rage in the UK when we were kids. Each pack of Top Trumps is based on a theme, such as cars, aircraft or in this case dinosaurs. Each card in the pack shows a list of numerical data about the item. For example, in this pack, each card shows a different type of dinosaur, and the stats include its intelligence, its weight, its length, and its age.
All the cards are dealt among the players. There must be at least two players, and at least one card for each player. The starting player selects a category from his or her topmost card and reads out its value. Each other player then reads out the value of the same category from their cards. The best (usually the largest) value wins the "trick", and the winner takes all the cards of the trick and places them at the bottom of his or her pile. That player then looks at their new topmost card, and chooses the category for the next round.

20 Under $20 - Part Two: Boys

Frogs and snails and puppy dogs' tails...

Following Part One for girls, here is the rest of the 20 under $20. Now although we think that boys will love these, there's no reason that girls might like some or all of these too so take a look even if you're planning to buy for someone made from sugar and spice and all things nice.

17. Pocket Doodles for Boys (7+) - $15.95

18. Mancala (6+) - $19.95

This is a firm favourite at our house and is perfect for trips, or rainy days. This is one of the oldest games in the world and was played initially with stones and scooped out holes in the ground. We first saw this in Africa but never knew how to play it so never bought a set. Our daughter Bella started playing at school and picked up the rules so we bought a game, loved it so much we've started stocking it in the shop.

The object of this game is to collect as many gems in your mancala (the large cup on the right) as possible. You and your opponent will take turns to move the gems, each time you want to move the gems, you need to pick up a cup on your side. And then you will take out all the gems in that cup and then distribute them to the next cups in the anti clockwise direction, one by one. If the last gem lands on your mancala, then you can pick another cup and move again. If the last gem lands on an empty cup on your side and the opposite cup has some gems in it, then you can capture all the gems in the two cups and put them into you mancala. The game ends when all the cups on your side or your opponent's side are empty. The remaining gems on a player's side will be counted as the gems of that player.

For all those budding astronauts how about this Apollo-style rocket. Some assembly is required. No painting necessary though (that's usually the tricky part). Includes an astronaut figurine, and a tool for aiding in making the model.

20 under $20 - Part One: Girls

Sometimes the cheap gifts are the best. We have lots of things in the shop for under $20 ideal for stocking fillers at Christmas, incentives, treats and small gifts. Here are some of our favourites for girls:

4. Wikkistix packs (4+) - $12.95-$16.95

They are bendy like pipe cleaners and waxy like crayons. They stick to each other, but don’t make a mess. They can be used over and over again and will even survive an accidental trip through the wash. They provide lots of open-ended, imaginative play and can be used alone or with other craft materials. What are they? The answer is Wikki Stix.

Wikki Stix are made of strands of acrylic hand-knitting yarn coated in a microcrystalline food-grade, non-toxic wax. The results are sticks that can be moulded, shaped, bent, cut, stuck together, stuck on other things or used for three-dimensional creations. They are half toy, half craft activity.
